Australian Open 2023: Mboko's Incredible Run & Sabalenka's Tough Battle (2026)

A young Canadian phenom is on a collision course with tennis royalty! Get ready for a thrilling showdown at the Australian Open as rising star Victoria Mboko gears up to face the formidable World No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, in a highly anticipated fourth-round clash. This marks the most significant challenge yet in the burgeoning career of the 19-year-old Canadian, who has rapidly ascended the ranks.

Mboko, the 17th seed, secured her spot in the second week of the tournament after a nail-biting third-round encounter on Friday. She emerged victorious with a score of 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3 against the 14th seed, Clara Tauson. This hard-fought win was particularly dramatic, as Mboko had to regroup after squandering three match points in the second set. This marks her first-ever fourth-round appearance at a Grand Slam event, achieved in just her fourth main draw appearance – a testament to her incredible talent and rapid development.

Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka, a two-time Australian Open champion, was also battling through a demanding match to extend her impressive streak of reaching the second week in Melbourne for the sixth consecutive year. Facing her good friend Anastasia Potapova, Sabalenka found herself in a tense situation. Despite holding a commanding lead of 7-6(4), 4-0, she was pushed to the brink, ultimately saving four set points in a dramatic second-set tiebreak to secure her victory with a score of 7-6(4), 7-6(7).

Mboko: The Power of Self-Belief

Before her clash with Tauson, Mboko had cruised through her opening two matches without dropping a set, seemingly on track to continue that dominant trend. She managed to secure the opening set in a tiebreak, even after being broken twice. She then found herself down an early break in the second set but fought back to build a 7-6(5), 5-3 lead, appearing to be in firm control.

But here's where it gets controversial... Tauson, however, found her A-game at the most crucial moments. Most notably, when she was just one point away from defeat at 5-4 in the second set, she unleashed a remarkable comeback. Winning five consecutive games, Tauson not only clinched the second set but also gained an early break in the third.

Reflecting on the intense battle, Mboko attributed her ability to overcome the challenge to "self-belief." The match, which lasted 2 hours and 19 minutes, saw Mboko break back immediately after falling behind in the third set, igniting a four-game streak of her own. She sealed the victory with powerful back-to-back backhand winners, clinching the match from 30-30 in the final game.

"I had so many chances in the second set but I have to give credit where its due, she was playing incredible tennis, so I just had to lock in in the important moments," Mboko shared after the match. "When you have those chances like that, and you're up in the match, and you have opportunities to finish but don't take it, it can be very discouraging. But that's why there's a third set, and I was able to regroup, find my groove again, and get it done. ... I really fought hard today."

This loss unfortunately means Tauson now holds a 0-3 career record in third-round matches at the Australian Open. What are your thoughts on Mboko's resilience? Did Tauson deserve to win that second set? Let us know in the comments!

Sabalenka's Unwavering Streak Continues

In their previous two encounters against Potapova, Sabalenka had been remarkably dominant, dropping a mere seven games across four sets. While the first set of their latest match was a closely contested affair lasting 1 hour and 4 minutes, Sabalenka showcased her class in the second set, winning 16 out of the first 19 points.

"She played incredible tennis. I was always on the back foot, and to be honest, there are days where you just have to be there, to fight and try your best to put the ball back," Sabalenka admitted. "Even though emotionally I was all over the place, I was able to still fight for every point ... and I'm just super happy that I was able to get this win. It was such a fight and I really enjoyed it."

And this is the part most people miss... Sabalenka candidly described her internal struggle: "I was just trying to calm myself down, which wasn't working well today, but at the same time, I was trying to figure out how to connect my body. It seemed like everything was working separate. My brain was somewhere else, my arms were going one direction ... and I was looking to put pressure on her, to try to let her play basically, and somehow, magically, I was able to get this win."

This victory extends Sabalenka's remarkable streak of reaching the fourth round or further at an incredible 13 consecutive Grand Slam events, a run that began after a third-round exit at Roland Garros in 2022.
